The most complicated and mature language embodies the highest level of civilizations across time and history. It is how we view and remember events, a lingo to record the world around us. Here we stand for the history of Russian literature in Australia. This prose represents Australian citizens who still enjoy writing in the mother tongue of their Russian heritage. Anyway, this Russian-speaking literature belongs to Australian Modern Culture and flourishes equally alongside its Anglo-Saxon counterpart. Runtu: Not much to tell. I’m now in my 70s, have way too many kids, and live in the Washington, DC, area. Recently, I published an article in The Human Prospect and a book chronicling my experiences as a Mormon missionary in Bolivia.

Runtu : So, after Thanksgiving was Hump Day / http://proza.ru/2023/11/15/1473  /  the USA

A couple of days after Thanksgiving was “Hump Day,” or the halfway point of my time in Bolivia. We went out for ice cream to celebrate. I was still limping badly, and it hurt to walk, but it was better than having a cast.

A couple of days later, Dash and his companion would be heading home, and I would be completely in charge of missionary travel and statistics.

I learned that a few missionaries did not like the office missionaries. One guy in particular, Harding, a chubby blond guy from North Carolina, was convinced that we were stealing his packages. Beck oversaw retrieving packages from the post office, and if he didn’t bring one back for Harding, he would blow up at us.

“I hate it here!” he’d say. “I can’t wait to get out of here.”

One morning we got our mail, and there was a customs ticket for a package with Harding’s name on it. Beck called him and told him he had a package, which he could pick up at the office after 11:00.

Beck and his companion drove over to customs, where each package would be opened, and an import duty assessed.

Harding got to the office around 10:00, excited that he finally had a package. “I can’t believe it. First time you guys haven’t stolen it.” Bit 11:00 he could barely contain himself; he was so anxious. Eventually, Beck walked in carrying a load of packages.

“Where’s mine?” Harding asked, grabbing at the boxes.
“Sorry, dude,” said Beck. “There was a problem at customs.”
“What are you talking about? I want my package now!”

Beck explained that when they got to the customs office, the missionary packages were in the same corner they were always in.

Beck would pick up a package, open it, and try to explain the contents to the customs agent, who would put a monetary value on it.

When Beck picked up Harding’s package, he noticed that a hole had been gnawed in a corner, and just then, a small mouse sprang from the hole. Inside the box were nothing but crumbs.

“I didn’t think you’d want me to pay the taxes on an empty box, so I left it there so they could throw it away,” said Beck, shrugging.
“Sorry about that.”

“You liar!” Harding yelled. “I’ll bet it was something good, and you guys just didn’t want me to have it. You’re trying to make my life even more miserable than it already is. Here you guys sit in your nice office.

You don’t have to work, and you live like kings, while the rest of us get nothing.” He stomped out of the office in a rage.

Just before Dash was to leave, we came home for lunch to find two missionaries who had come to stay with us on their way home. Roberts, a short, balding blond guy from Northern California, was ready to go home. He had a reputation for always claiming illness, no matter whether he was sick or not.

Of course, in Bolivia, most of us were sick most of the time, anyway. He had been in Tarija with me, and every time I had asked him how he was doing, he would say something like, “Well, the room is kind of spinning, but other than that, I’m OK.”

At one point, one of his companions had gotten so sick of his complaining that he had checked Roberts into the hospital and left him there for three days.

The other missionary, Woodward, was one of those people who had completely adopted the missionary persona: sober and humorless, he followed every rule “with exactness,” as the scripture says and clearly disdained those who were not quite as obedient as he was.

Right after lunch, the phone rang with some incredible news: missions that before had been 18 months long would now last for two years. President Nichols said that we could choose whether we wanted to go home at 18 months or stay longer.

For a moment, I was too shocked to say anything. Dash said, “Hey, my bags are already packed. I’m going home tomorrow.” His companion said the same.

I wasn’t surprised when Woodward said, “I’m staying. This is exciting.” But I was genuinely shocked when Roberts, the sickly guy, said, “Me, too.”

It took a little scrambling at the immigration office, but I managed to arrange for them to stay.

I wasn’t really sure what to do. Through my teenage years, I had saved just enough money to pay for the 18 months.

To stay, I would have to ask my parents to pay for the last six months. President Nichols told us that the decision was ours to make, but he sort of hinted that he’d be terribly disappointed if we didn’t stay.

Harding showed up late the afternoon. “Is it true?” he asked, tears streaming down his face. “Do we really have to stay here for two years?”

“No, elder, you can stay if you want to, but it’s your choice,” I said.

“Oh, thank God,” he said.

That evening we sat on the balcony, talking, and one by one, we all said we were going to stay. I called my parents from ENTEL to ask, and my mother said it was fine with her, but I’d have to talk to my father.

So, I gave her our phone number, and she said Dad would call in the morning. Just as we were getting dressed for church, my dad called.

“Dad,” I said. “I want to stay here an extra six months.”

“Why would you want to do that?” asked my dad.

I thought for a moment. Why was I doing this? I suppose it was a mixture of duty and peer pressure and a genuine desire to do what was right, but I just said, “It just seems like something I need to do.”

He said, “Well, then, we’ll support you.” He went on to say that he had just received a phone call the night before from church headquarters saying that they might send me home because of my knee injury. I told him that was news to me and that it was much better.

“John,” he said very seriously. “You must tell us the truth about your health. You write in your letters that you’re doing fine, but that Elder Charlton told us that the last time he saw you, you were so sick he thought you should be in the hospital, but you lied and said you were fine.”

“I didn’t want you to worry about me,” I told him.

“We worry more because we never know what’s really going on,” he said.

“I’m sorry, Dad. I won’t lie to you again.” I hadn’t spoken to my father in months, and he was chewing me out. But he was right.

“I’ll support you in staying as long as you promise to be straight with me.” I said I would.

The next day, Dash peeled off the last red sticker and got on a plane to Miami and then home.

Roberts and Woodward headed off to Santa Cruz.

I realized that I’d get another hump day in a few months.

President Nichols asked me if I was going to stay for the whole two years, and I said I had decided to stay.

He smiled and said, “I’m glad to hear that. I had hoped all of you would stay. The Lord needs you.”

If He did, He had me for another six months.
